    The Art of Seeing by Aldous Huxley. Aldous Huxley benefited enormously from the Bates method and wrote this excellent book out of gratitude to his teachers. In a clear and concise writing style, he explains the theory behind the ‘art of seeing’ and offers many techniques to promote healthy vision. Huxley’s aim is to ‘correlate the methods of visual education with the findings of modern psychology and critical philosophy’. HarperCollins Publishers 1994

    Natural Vision Improvement by Janet Goodrich, Ph.D.
    A holistic approach to vision improvement expanding on the Bates Method and including brain integration, movement, relaxation, visualization, creativity, nutrition, emotional release and activities. Goodrich improved her own nearsightedness and astigmatism as she did research in psychology and vision improvement in the 1970s and 1980s. Celestial Arts Books 1986

    How to Improve Your Child’s Eyesight Naturally by Janet Goodrich, Ph.D. Written for parents and others who care about children’s vision, this book is informative and offers fun, creative activities to help children with various vision conditions. A tape of songs to accompany the book is also available. Inner Traditions International 2004

    Perfect Sight without Glasses by William H. Bates, M.D. The classic work on vision improvement by the pioneer ophthalmologist who practiced in the early 1900s. Bates studied how people with perfect sight saw, then developed ways for those with poorer vision to develop those habits. Many thousands of people have improved their vision by using his methods.

    Help Yourself to Better Sight by Margaret Darst Corbett. A classic by a well-known Bates teacher who trained many other teachers in the Bates-Corbett Method of Eye Education. Prentice-Hall 1949

    Relearning to See by Tom Quackenbush. A very thorough and comprehensive exploration of the Bates Method and of Natural Vision Improvement. North Atlantic Books 1997

    Eye Yoga; How You See Is How You Think by Dr. Jane Rigney Battenberg and Martha Rigney. This is a fascinating and practical book combining the more traditional approach to holistic vision improvement with techniques from Neuro-Linguistic programming (NLP), yoga and psychology. In addition, by requiring one to do the work with a partner, it will help reduce the aloneness so many students feel who live far from a teacher and have to explore and heal their vision on their own.

    Improve Your Vision by Martin Brofman. In this book, Martin Brofman provides a practical program for anyone seeking clarity on all levels. This is a book about insight as well as eyesight.     Restoring Your Eyesight: A Taoist Approach by Doug Marsh Doug Marsh combines proven methods pioneered a century ago by eye doctor William Bates, with the ancient Chinese wisdom of Taoism. Marsh describes how vision goes deeper than the eyes and optic nerves, extending well into the layers of the mind, emotions, and spirit. Ten Speed 2007

    28 Days to Reading Without Glasses by Lisette Scholl. If you are over forty and have developed a condition known as presbyopia (often called ‘middle-age sight), you may not be able to focus to read clearly. Using a holistic approach, the author provides a four-week program of simple exercises to help overcome this and other conditions of blurry vision, in order to give you freedom from reading glasses.     Liberman tells the story of improving his own eyesight and the contradictions between his experience and his training as an optometrist.     Natural Eye Care: An Encyclopedia – Complementary Treatments for Improving and Saving Your Eyes by Marc Grossman, O.D., L.Ac. and Glen Swartwout, O.D. Grossman and Swartwout cover critical territory in this new book on self-help for eye diseases, using a natural approach. They guide the reader through proper nutrition, acupuncture, acupressure and basic exercises for a variety of eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.     The Handbook of Self-Healing: Your Personal Program for Better Health and Increased Vitality by Meir Schneider PhD, L.M.T. and Maureen Larkin. Schneider, who cured himself of congenital blindness, describes specific exercises, movements and body work, and includes an excellent section on vision. Penguin 1994

    Movement for Self-Healing by Meir Schneider PhD, L.M.T. Born blind, Meir Schneider was convinced that his condition was not permanent. As a teenager he began work with two teachers who gave him exercises to reverse the blindness. Over time, he became able to see, and he continued developing techniques for self-healing. This book is filled with clearly illustrated exercises for eye problems and also for conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, back pain and muscular dystrophy. New World Library 2004

    Amazing Grace by Grace Halloran. The autobiography of a tenacious and courageous woman who would not accept that she would go blind from her diagnosed condition of congenital retinitis pigmentosa. Her story is moving and inspiring. North Star Publications 1993

    Sunlight Could Save Your Life by Zane Kime, M.D., M.S. This book relates many research studies which demonstrate the relationship between nutrition, sunlight, health and disease. It offers many insights into the relationship of sunlight to human health.

    Total Health at the Computer by Martin Sussman & Dr. Ernest Loewenstein with Howard Sann. This book teaches the reader how to be pain free at the computer, and to relieve symptoms of computer stress syndrome, eyestrain, headaches, tension, sore wrists, hands, shoulders, neck and back.     The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge, M.D. This wonderful book explains the research that shows how our habits actually transform our brain anatomy and the best ways to alter these habits. It describes how it is the mind that sees and ways to undo our customary mental patterns. Doidge makes this material very understandable. James A. Silberman Books

    Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter Levine with Ann Frederick. Living is stressful. In the natural flow of life we recover from stress by resting and relaxing. When the stress is too much and we are unable to recover, it is called trauma. It stays in the body and can accumulate bringing stiffness in the muscles and habitual pathways in the brain. This excellent book explains the mechanisms of stress and trauma in addition to describing how we can heal.
